Title: Indexing Similarity: A New Metric for Group Comparisons

Abstract: In social statistics, researchers routinely need to summarize the similarity between two groups. For example, in social experiments, policy makers may want to know the representativeness of a particular study for their population. In surveys, researchers may want to know how non-response might affect findings. And when a treatment is selected, researchers might want to know how similar those who select the treatment are to those that do not. All of these are descriptive problems in which it can be helpful to index the degree of similarity in a way that provides information in an interpretable metric. In this talk, I introduce an index that, when combined with propensity score methods, can provide a useful summary statistic and diagnostic. I then provide properties of the statistic and examples of its implementation.
