TitleLearning in transition to the workplace: Perspectives from the statistical community and implications

Abstract: While the demand for statisticians and data scientists is expanding across many different fields and sectors, employers are experiencing difficulties in hiring. The job market offers few entry-level openings and the transition from education to the profession can be challenging. Indeed, statisticians develop practices that grow out of experience and there is a misalignment between practices acquired through education and practices required by the profession. Communication, collaboration, or data management are a few examples of these practices. Members of the statistical community were recruited at conferences around the world and explored their inner perspectives on the role of statisticians by identifying important practices. In addition, a selection of junior statisticians and mentors were interviewed to uncover how the development of these practices occurred. Implications addressed to the community advocate for transformations in academic settings and at the workplace, in order to promote authentic practices to facilitate the transition between education and profession for future statisticians.
