Description

This event is canceled

The Spring 2023 SDS Seminar Series concludes on Friday, May 5th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with  Dr. Ana-Maria Staicu (Professor at North Carolina State University). This event is in-person, but a virtual option will be available as well.

Title: Spatial functional principal component analysis

Abstract: We consider functional data observed at many spatial locations, also called spatially-indexed functional data. Current literature has studied functional principal component-based methodology when the spatial domain increases with the number of spatial locations. The consistency of the methods fails when the spatial domain is fixed or bounded. We examine this latter scenario and discuss a new estimation approach and prediction of a full trajectory at an unobserved location using a functional principal component framework. We show that the estimators and predictions are consistent under infill asymptotics scenario and examine their finite sample performance in numerical simulations. We further illustrate our approach in two applications involving fixed spatial domain: spatially-indexed fine particulate nitrate profiles monitored across the United States and county-level profile data from the COVID-19 pandemic.
