Assistant Dean Stacy and Professor Ekland-Olson Receive Prestigious Teaching Award

August 23, 2012—Drs. Cathy Stacy and Sheldon Ekland-Olson, two founding members of the Division of Statistics + Scientific Computation, were honored last night at an award ceremony for recipients of the 2012 UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award.

Dr. Cathy Stacy"I am immensely grateful," says Cathy. "It's great fun to be recognized for something that I love to do."

Students, faculty, and external reviewers comprise the review panels that evaluate a candidate’s teaching performance, including classroom expertise, curricula quality, innovative course development, and student learning outcomes.

"Engaging students, encouraging discovery, and imparting a sense of importance form the foundation of all that I do when teaching," shares Sheldon. "I aim to help students think carefully."Professor Ekland-Olson

Established in 2008, this highly competitive award is offered annually in recognition of faculty members at the nine academic and six health University of Texas System institutions who demonstrate extraordinary classroom performance and innovation in undergraduate instruction. The Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Board of Regents and includes a $25,000 monetary award.

Both Cathy and Sheldon intend to continue to do what they do—be outstanding teachers.
