The Department of Statistics and Data Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin is hosting the 13th annual UT Summer Statistics Institute (SSI) May 26–29, 2020! Learn more and register.

What is this course?

Introduction to Data Analysis and Graphics using R is a hands-on course intended to provide first-time users the ability to analyze data using R. The course will start by covering basic programming skills in R and interacting with the user-friendly RStudio interface. Participants will run statistical analyses and create graphical displays of the data using example datasets from a variety of disciplines. Those with some R experience will benefit from the more advanced statistical models and programming topics covered in the second half of the course.

Who can take this course?

This course is designed for those with an interest in using R to manage, analyze, and display data. Those with a basic understanding of common statistical methods will benefit most from this course. There is no prior knowledge of R required to take this class. However, participants should be comfortable working with data in excel or similar formats. A basic understanding of common statistical methods is recommended.

What are the requirements to enroll?

A personal laptop with the latest versions of R and RStudio is required. This summer all courses will be offered online and will have a one hour synchronous session in the morning, an asynchronous session time for participants to run through exercises and/or comprehension checks, another one hour synchronous session in the afternoon, follow up exercises if applicable before the next morning session.

Who is teaching the class?

Sally Ragsdale, Associate Professor of Instruction, is teaching this course at 10 AM and 2 PM. Professor Ragsdale has received her M.S. in Statistics from UT in May 2012 and has been an instructional faculty member for SDS for the past eight years. She coordinates SDS 328M Biostatistics, an undergraduate statistics course where students use R in a weekly lab. She also runs the SDS certificate and portfolio programs.
