SDS Postdoctoral Fellows Receive Award at Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) 2025

The Department of Statistics and Data Sciences (SDS) is proud to congratulate Postdoctoral Fellows Sherry Zhang, Sarah Coleman, Lydia Lucchesi, and Saptarshi Roy on receiving a prestigious award at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) 2025, held August 2–7 in Nashville, Tennessee.
The team won the Professional Division of the Data Challenge Expo, an event that tasks participants with delivering the most insightful exploratory analysis of a selected dataset. Their winning poster, titled “Exploring the Periodicity of Flight Patterns,” offered a compelling look into trends and temporal rhythms in flight data. Sherry Zhang served as the first author, while Sarah Coleman presented the team’s work at the conference. You can explore their project on their GitHub repository.
JSM is one of the largest and most influential gatherings in the field of statistics and data science, bringing together thousands of statisticians, researchers, and data professionals from academia, industry, and government. The conference features a wide range of sessions including paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, and panel discussions covering emerging topics in statistics and data science. The Data Challenge Expo, organized by the American Statistical Association, is a particularly exciting forum for innovative data exploration and visualization.
This award recognizes not only the technical skill of our postdocs but also their ability to communicate complex insights clearly and creatively. Congratulations to Sherry, Sarah, Lydia, and Saptarshi on this outstanding achievement!
