SSI 2018 is Over. What Now?
The 2019 Summer Statistics Institute is in the works, but why wait, statistical training is available year-round.
The Department of Statistics and Data Sciences has multiple options for statistical training for UT-Austin faculty, students, and staff, ranging from Topic and Software short courses to the Statistics Online Support (SOS) system.
Software and Topic Short Courses – Fall 2018 course listing coming soon
Available to: UT Austin faculty, students, and staff
Fall/Spring Semester: SDS Software and Topic Short courses are for current UT-Austin faculty, staff, and students, and cost $30 per seat. Seating for each class is limited, with registration taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Past courses have included, "Introduction to Python," "Introduction to R," "Excel and Data Graphics," "Introduction to Stata," and "Introduction to Regression." The Fall 2018 schedule will be published in August 2018.
Custom Short Courses: In addition to the standard Software and Topic Short Courses, the Department of Statistics and Data Sciences is offers Custom Short Courses specifically designed to meet your group needs. These courses can include instruction on various software packages including: R and RStudio, Stata, SAS, SPSS, MS Excel.
We can also provide your group with instruction on various statistical techniques such as:
- Basic inferential statistics
- Regression analysis
- Advanced regression techniques
- Multilevel Models or Hierarchical Linear Models
- Path Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling
Custom Short Courses are individually developed in collaboration with your group to make sure your needs will be met. We can develop a course that is anywhere from 3 to 12 hours of instruction, with competitive student pricing. Custom Short Courses require a minimum of 10 participants. Statistical Consulting
Available to: UT Austin faculty, students, and staff
Free Consulting: All UT Austin students, faculty, and staff are eligible for up to one hour of free consulting each week. Our statistical consultants are available for appointments by phone/Skype or in-person, and they can also answer questions over email.
Contract Consulting: We also offer professional data analysis services to UT faculty and staff researchers with complex statistical or data management projects. Our contract consulting services are tailored to meet your needs. Contract services are provided for an hourly fee and can include data cleaning and manipulation, power analyses, tailored data analyses, or detailed reporting of results. Our consultants can guide you through the process of taking a raw dataset to a polished publication, or directly assist you by performing programming, data management, or analysis in a variety of applications. We support SAS, SPSS, Stata, AMOS, HLM, Mplus, and others. If you desire, our consultants can also assist you in writing up the results for publication.
Statistics Online Support (SOS)
Available to: Open to the public.
The Statistics Online Support (SOS) resource platform is an interactive, decision tree-based site that asks users a series of questions that guide them to the appropriate statistical technique. The site provides detailed examples, alongside embedded tutorial videos showing how to conduct the analysis by hand calculation or using the software packages R and Excel.
The site is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who want to boost the quality of their quantitative analyses when working on research projects, journal article submissions, or dissertations.
Use SOS:
- As a tool to determine the appropriate statistical analysis for your data
- To find more information about a specific analysis including the statistical assumptions to check, a description of the test
- To watch embedded videos that guide you through the analysis process

SDS Seminar Series – Fall 2018 schedule coming soon
Available to: SDS Seminar Series are free and open to UT Austin faculty, students, staff and wider community.
The series is envisioned as a vital contribution to the intellectual, cultural, and scholarly environment at The University of Texas at Austin for students, faculty, and the wider community. Each talk is free of charge and open to the public and are scheduled on Friday afternoon’s during the Fall and Spring semesters.
