Ph.D. in Statistics Funding

Ph.D. students in Statistics receive full financial support for five academic years.

The Department of Statistics and Data Sciences and College of Natural Sciences intend to provide full financial support to each student in the Ph.D. program for five years. Financial support will consist of an assistantship with either teaching or research duties. Support is subject to satisfactory academic progress and satisfactory performance of assistantship duties. There are generally three types of support students receive.

Academic Employment

Academic employment will consist of an assistantship with either teaching or research duties that provides tuition remittance and a stipend adequate for living in Austin. Students are expected to maintain a full course load and to devote effort primarily to their students and assigned duties. Support is subject to satisfactory academic progress and satisfactory performance of assistantship duties.

  • Teaching Assistant – Appointed by the SDS Department to provide classroom assistance to a faculty member assigned to a SDS course.
  • Graduate Research Assistant – Selected by individual faculty who have their own grants to provide research assistance to that faculty member.
  • Assistant Instructor – Appointed by the SDS Department to teach undergraduate classes and provide instruction under the supervision of a SDS instructional faculty member.

Teaching and graduate research assistantships provide valuable experience and financial support for graduate students. But employment in a non-academic role at the university or in the community is also an option for many graduate students.

Graduate Fellowships

The Ph.D. Statistics program actively encourages and supports students to take advantage of the recruitment fellowships offered by the Graduate School at UT Austin. These awards typically provide a fellowship of $28,000-36,000 as well as stipends toward medical insurance expenses, tuition, and fees. Fellowships currently directed toward the recruitment of underrepresented groups include:
