A Data Science Journey in Business

Description

The Fall 2023 SDS Seminar Series continues on September 29th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with David Moriarty (Director, Machine Learning & Data Science at Apple). This event is in-person.

Title: A Data Science Journey in Business

Abstract: Data science in business has been a journey. Twenty-five years ago business practitioners of data science were called data miners. Their specialty was known as business intelligence or business analytics. As those descriptors have lost favor, new terms like data science and AI/ML have emerged and become all the rage. While the names may be transient, the practice of applied data science in business has changed little over this tenure. In this talk, I will describe my journey over the last 25 years applying statistical algorithms to business problems. Through examples of successes and failures, I will show how applied data science is often more craft than science. I will discuss lessons learned, common pitfalls, and important factors that drive impact. Finally, I will show how success depends less on the latest algorithms and more on selecting the best opportunities.
